Unsupervised (Servant in the Place of Truth)
£55.00
This piece explores the tension between human and AI capabilities, with Artificial Intelligence increasingly able to perform both menial jobs and also creative tasks. The title of the work references ‘Unsupervised’ by Refik Anadol - an artwork entirely generated by AI algorythms, and derided as “techno lava” by critic Jerry Saltz. The artwork also references iconography from William Blake’s illustrations of Satan’s torment of Job, Van Gogh’s ‘Artist on the Road to Tarascon’, and the tomb art of the Egyptian artisan Pesdus (also known as Servant in the Place of Truth). The artwork presents a world of unchecked (i.e. “unsupervised”) Artificial Intelligence, appearing to overwhelm humanity. A “volcano” of art (in the shape of Tate Modern’s new Blavatnik Building), spews “techno lava”, while some citizens flee and others enjoy the spectacle. Meanwhile, the figure of Vincent Van Gogh appears to escape the destruction, suggesting that true human creativity cannot be surpassed by digital algorithms, thus offering a beacon of hope for the future.
