Pangloss
£55.00
This artwork explores the relationship between AI and humanity. Lines from Voltaire’s ‘Candide’ provide the source material: “all is for the best in the best of all possible worlds” and “we must cultivate our garden”. These two lines represent different viewpoints, with one suggesting that since everything happens for a reason, there is no point interfering with world events. The other suggests we must remain diligent and take care of the earth and each other, rather that assuming all will end well. In “Pangloss” we see the ‘cultivation’ of AI from a small flower into a giant monstrous computer. Meanwhile, the Earth is burning up - and humanity escapes towards the computer for safety, only to be vaporised by it - or possibly turned into robotic ‘superhumans’. These giant robotic figures soon fly away in search of new worlds - leaving the remnants of Earth behind. The artwork playfully explores the ambivalent role that Artificial Intelligence might soon play in human existence - for better or worse.
