The Floating World
£55.00
The Floating World takes inspiration from David Hockney’s famous “California” paintings. Hockney’s hyper-coloured depictions of pools and swimmers were based upon photographs of friends and images from lifestyle magazines. Rather than using photographs of actual places and people, however, The Floating World is created from digitally designed ‘avatars’ and video game landscapes, resulting in a poolside paradise where fantasy and reality converge. The name ‘Floating World’ is derived from Japanese ukiyo-e prints, which flourished in the 17th to 19th century. These prints typically used vibrant colours and gradients to depict a fantasy world of luxury, comfort and hedonism.
